Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Expertly tailored treatments to utilise modern technology to optimise reproductive health

Low Level laser Therapy (LLLT) is becoming increasingly popular in the field of fertility. An example of the efficacy of LLLT was demonstrated in a Japanese study published in 2012 where pregnancy rates were improved by 24% for women with severe infertility problems and after many IVF failures. Many clinics around the world have reported increased pregnancy success rates for clients when using laser therapy for natural or assisted conception. It involves the use of low powered, non-heating laser light application on specific points and areas on the body with no side effects.

One of the best advantages of laser therapy in fertility is its ability to increase mitochondria energy production for the egg and sperm. A tremendous amount of cellular energy is needed for follicular/sperm growth, fertilization, embryo development, and implantation. As we age, the energy structures within our cells (mitochondria) begin to wear down and aren’t capable of producing as much energy (ATP). This decline can lead to chromosomally abnormal eggs, impacting fertility and conception potential. Application of LLLT has been shown to directly increase ATP energy in the mitochondria, potentially producing chromosomally healthier eggs and sperm.

Benefits of LLLT

LLLT may help with the following conditions:

  • Egg and sperm quality issues
  • Low ovarian reserve
  • High FSH
  • Advanced reproductive age
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Premature Ovarian Insufficiency
  • Painful periods
  • Thin endometrial lining
  • Upcoming IVF or FET cycle
  • Poor IVF responders
  • Embryo transfer
  • Miscarriage
  • Supporting the uterine environment for embryo implantation

How Does LLLT Work in Fertility?

  • Increases mitochondria function and ATP (energy) production
  • Regulates inflammation and reduces inflammatory markers
  • Defends cells against damage caused by oxidative stress
  • Improves blood circulation to the reproductive organs
  • Improves gut microbiome
  • Softens scarring and adhesions
  • Decreases stress and promotes relaxation
  • Regulates the nervous system and optimizes vagus nerve function
  • Reduces oxidative damage

Laser Protocols

  • Timing: Starting on the first day of menstruation, 2-3 sessions are recommended per week up until ovulation. If pregnancy doesn’t occur, another course of treatment is given.
  • Pre-IVF: At least 6 sessions prior to the start of IVF.
  • During IVF Stimulation: 2-3 treatments leading up to egg collection.
  • Embryo Transfer Day: 2 treatments on the day of embryo transfer.
  • Pre-Transfer: 6 sessions before transfer.
  • Transfer Day: Two sessions on transfer day.
  • Adjustment: Frequency of treatments can be adjusted in cases of thin endometrial lining or history of miscarriages.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Aside from egg quality issues, there are a number of complications that can impede the likelihood of getting and staying pregnant. Many clients in our clinic suffer from thyroid issues, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Researchers in Brazil have been studying the effects of low-level laser therapy on the thyroid gland in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and the results have been encouraging.

Ovarian PRP Protocol

A growing number of clinics offer ovarian and uterine stem cell and PRP treatments for women with low ovarian reserve, low follicle count, and uterine receptivity issues. The combination of PRP and LLLT is not new to the medical field as LLLT can enhance those medical procedures by inducing vasodilatation and increasing blood flow.

  • Recommendation: 4-6 sessions prior to medical procedure. Can be combined with acupuncture/microcurrent therapy for optimal results.

Laser Therapy for Male Fertility

Research studies on LLLT for male infertility show promising results, improving sperm motility, count, and overall male reproductive health. LLLT stimulates mitochondrial activity, enhances cellular function and circulation, and increases ATP production, boosting sperm motility and quality. LLLT can also reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, potentially improving sperm count and overall fertility.

  • Treatment Frequency: Generally includes 1-2 months of weekly treatments.

Combination with Acupuncture

All LLLT treatments can be performed as a stand alone treatment or in combination with acupuncture. The frequency of treatments is evaluated based on personal circumstances. A recent study demonstrated that women receiving LLLT prior to frozen embryo transfer resulted in improved pregnancy and live birth rates and lowered miscarriage rates.

Equipment Used

I use high power Powermedic Class 3B, low power Erchonia EVRL Class 2 lasers, as well as medical-grade Bioflex red and infrared light panels. Laser therapy can be used in combination with acupuncture to harness the strength of both therapies or as a stand-alone treatment. The unique blend of these therapies can potentially further improve reproductive outcomes.
