In terms of the physiological effects on fertility, the underlying theory of how acupuncture works can be explained in three main ways: regulating the communication between the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis to optimise hormone balance, to optimise ovarian function and promote healthy eggs by stimulating blood flow to the reproductive organs; and by boosting production of endorphins that inhibit stress hormone levels. Acupuncture can also improve implantation rates and provides an excellent support for clients undergoing IVF.
Acupuncture treatment is accumulative and has better outcomes with regular treatments. Many of our clients often need 2-3 months of weekly treatments to achieve conception either naturally or prior to IVF. In the past, research mostly focused on two treatments that were performed on the day of embryo transfer.
However, a
latest study demonstrated that 12 individualised treatments with a whole-system Chinese medicine approach resulted in higher live birth rates compared to groups that had acupuncture only on the day of transfer or IVF treatment without supporting therapy.
Male infertility accounts for ∼50% of all infertility cases. Poor semen parameters can compromise fertility, conception and successful implantation. Studies have demonstrated that acupuncture is an effective therapy to improve sperm quality, however the integration of care from both Western and TCM practitioners can often ensure a comprehensive approach. Lifestyle, dietary changes and supplement recommendation are integral parts of the treatment.
